Visualize Success, Not Pre-Race Jitters

By Trina VerSteeg Wilcox

As I write this, many of you are gearing up for the Aflac Iron Girl 5K this coming weekend. Whether this is your first race or you've done so many you've lost count, you may have a few butterflies in your stomach. Don't worry - you are never alone when it comes to pre-race jitters.

The saying goes that performance is more mental than it is physical. While that may be true, it doesn't ease your nerves. If anything, it can be frustrating to think that you should be able to "visualize" a fabulous race. After all, if that were a fail-proof plan, why do you drag your bum out for those early morning runs every day? You would just "see" yourself in perfect shape and zoom ahead to the finish line from the comfort of your cozy bed.

There's no need to hide under the covers or dwell. What you should do is feel confident that you have done the training and visualize yourself racing strong. Keep in mind that the participant next to you is going to be as strong as her training and mental power, too. It's all about doing your best in "this event and in these conditions."

Every race is as unique as the strong, powerful people that line up at the starting line. You are not racing against anyone; you are racing against the present situation. The saying goes for life and being an Iron Girl, "One step (stroke, or pedal push) at a time." You had the guts to start, now have the guts to finish - I can see you doing it! Good luck, Girls!
